ABOUT ME

​I am an Assistant Professor at Dalhousie University in the Department of Political Science. Before joining Dal I was a postdoctoral fellow at TMU as a member of the Canadian Municipal Election Study (CMES) and  a SSHRC postdoctoral fellow at the University of Calgary. I have degrees from Carleton (PhD) and the University of Waterloo (MA and BA).

My research interests include intra-party democracy, party organization, and political behaviour/psychology. I
n general my research focuses on questions of participation and representation in party and electoral politics. I have written on a variety of topics including multi-level party integration, party personnel selection, personality and politics, candidate recruitment, and political ambition. With more than 50 publications, my research has appeared in a variety of national and international journals such as Party Politics, Political Research Quarterly, Canadian Journal of Political Science, Representation, Regional & Federal Studies, and Politics & Gender​ as well as chapters in a number of edited volumes.

I am also the co-author of The Political Party in Canada (UBC Press, 2022), The Promise and Challenge of Party Primary Elections: A Comparative Perspective (McGill-Queens University Press, 2016), and the co-editor of The Personalization of Democratic Politics and the Challenge for Political Parties (ECPR Press, 2018).
